It’s almost showtime for the 2018 Beaufort International Film Festival and excitement is in the air!  This five-day event gets underway February 21 and Beaufort is all set to enamor thousands of film buffs from near and far with a healthy dose of Southern hospitality while they soak in screen time at an event that  MovieMaker Magazine has called one of the “25 Coolest Film Festivals.” And if you’re among those planning to attend, chances are right about now you’re marking off the days with gleeful anticipation.

As you count down the days to the festival, whet your appetite for what’s to come.

BIFF has listed award category finalists on the festival website. So, take a moment to peruse the titles of Official Selections in Features, Documentaries, Shorts, Screenplays, Animation, Comedy, Student Films and Audience Choice. Want a visual sneak peek? Check out the trailer for a glimpse of films that – Co-Film Festival Director Rebecca Tucker says – “represent the very best in filmmaking brilliance.”

Get the inside scoop on BIFF 2018 from start to finish in Lowcountry Weekly.

As always, Lowcountry Weekly has its finger on the pulse of our community and will be covering the festival on the scene and behind the scenes. Features Editor Mark Shaffer has already done some very interesting pieces, interviewing Ron Tucker, Beaufort Film Society President and Co-Film Festival Director in December and recently reaching out to first-time filmmakers to do some insightful Q&A.

In case you haven’t heard, you’ll see some differences and “firsts” this year.

Ron Tucker has called this an “out of the box” year for the festival. So, as your anticipation builds, make a mental note about what’s new and different this time around. For instance:

  • Starting this year, BIFF will screen all feature films at night so that folks who work during the day will have the opportunity to see them.
  • This year’s festival also has more films than ever before -- 43 will be screened, including ones that are not in competition.
  • Missy Rucker, an East Coast Set Decorator for the Film and Television Industry, will receive the prestigious Behind the Scenes Award. Missy will be the first female recipient of this award.
  • And, BIFF 2018 marks the inaugural presentation of an award named for the late Pat Conroy, a bestselling author and Academy Award nominated Screenwriter and a long time Beaufort resident before his death in 2016. “Hollywood  legend” Dale Dye will be presented with the festival’s  first Pat Conroy Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gala on Sunday evening.

If you haven’t gotten tickets yet, here’s info on how to do just that.

Festival organizers are predicting that BIFF 2018 will be the most attended ever. And that is, as the saying goes, no small potatoes given that last year’s festival drew more than 12,000 attendees. So, let’s get ready to star watch, mix and mingle, and experience a gamut of emotions invoked by another great year of films screened right here in our beguilingly beautiful, historic coastal town where the arts scene is sweet all year round and events like Beaufort International Film Festival are icing on the cake.
