SPECIAL SAUCE: OUR RECIPE FOR RAVING FANS

If you just bought a new house, or are looking to breathe a new life into your current one by doing a bit of a redesign, you might be excited to just get things going. However, there are a few common mistakes people make when doing a DIY design for their homes, regardless of style, budget and location. Check out these common mistakes and see how you can avoid them!

Painting Before Buying Furniture

Picking out colors and painting your walls before actually purchasing your furniture is a common (and often frequent!) design mistake that can easily be avoided. It is actually much easier to pick a wall color that will complement furnishings, rather than the other way round. Choose your selection of furniture, and then decide on which color paint to buy. If you're really sent into incorporating a certain color in your room, try finding larger furniture pieces in that shade.

Against The Wall

We often tend to push furniture up against a wall whenever we start placing them. Depending on your room's layout and space, it may sometimes even be necessary. But whenever possible, you should avoid doing so, since furniture placed up against the walls of any room does not do much in saving space or creating the illusion of a larger room. Center your pieces and pulling items closer together to create a flow that doesn’t box anyone in.

Combine Darks and Lights

Most people tend to avoid certain styles or colors when they try to avoid making it look too masculine or feminine, especially in personal spaces like bathrooms or bedrooms. However, using only darker tones for rooms does not equate to making it look more masculine, nor will your home be more feminine if you have lighter colors and themes. Having a nice balance of light and dark tones in the room make for a more neutral and relaxed space that's  pleasing to the eye as well.

Too Much Contrast

More often than not, we get all too excited when picking out decors that we forget to factor in if they will clash against one another. Keep in mind that a room where every item contrasts is a mistake you should avoid, since a space with pieces that don’t coordinate come off as eyesores. Don't lose cohesiveness in your room by making sure you have a balance of pieces that match and contrast each other. Finding a common element where you can will also go a long way in tying your decor together.

Balance Highs and Lows

Furniture height is a mistake a lot of people often overlook when designing their homes. However, this is something you should always keep  in mind. Imagine a city skyline where all buildings are the same height, and you would have an idea of how boring this look can be. Create a beautiful flow that pleases the eye by ensuring that the furniture in your room have various heights and sizes, and elevated in multiple ways throughout the room.
