The Lowcountry shows off its red, white and blue this Fourth of July with fun, family events and fireworks displays! No matter what your traditional 4th activities are, there is something for everyone happening in Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort, SC!
Start the day as a participant or spectator of the 31st Annual Hilton Head Firecracker Run at 8 a.m. at Shelter Cove Community Park & Shelter Cove Towne Centre. More than 1,700 runners and walkers of all ages are expected to be on hand for the annual family event, which is an Independence Day tradition. The Firecracker Run is the largest and oldest road race in Beaufort County and one of the top 10 races in South Carolina. Participants range from under eight to over 80. The fast and flat course runs through Shelter Cove past Broad Creek and finishes at Shelter Cove Community Park. There will be a festive post-race celebration featuring live music, a children’s fun run, vendors, fresh fruit, ice cold refreshments, a cool zone, door prizes and more. If running isn’t really your style, head down to Sea Pines Plantation on the south end of Hilton Head Island for a July 4th parade. This annual parade starts at 8:30 a.m. at the parking lot adjacent to the Harbour Town Lighthouse. Register there and pick up decorating supplies for your bike, wagon, scooter, dog or family. Line up begins at 9:30 a.m. This fun, family-friendly parade is a great way to show off your red, white and blue spirit! And be sure to get creative because entries will be judged for their patriotism. The fun continues afterward after the parade with carnival games, activities and more. Just up the road there’s even more fun to be had with the kids. The Sandbox Children’s Museum will hold “Pop! Goes the Sandbox” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Let your little firecrackers bounce in the Bounce House, build with the Big Blue Blocks, aim for the cornhole, tug-a-rope-rivalry and more! (weather permitting). Take part in a special holiday craft and show-your-colors cookie decorating. Enjoy hot dogs, chips, lemonade, brownies and watermelon. Bring your American Flag, the bigger the better, to the beaches for the annual "Salute from the Shore". This year, the annual tribute will continue with a flyover of vintage military aircraft and F-16s from the South Carolina Air National Guard’s 169th Fighter Wing at McEntire Joint National Guard Base. The flyover will commence at 1 p.m. in Cherry Grove and conclude over the May River Sandbar in Bluffton, SC around 1:30 p.m. For exact timing for your location and more information, visit salutefromtheshore.org.
At 6 p.m., head on over to Shelter Cove Community Park on Hilton Head Island for the special Fourth of July Community Market and Summer Jams concert. The Shelter Cove Summer Community Market features vendors selling local farm-fresh produce, artwork, sweets, baked goods and other specialty foods, as well as prepared food vendors for those looking to grab a snack or dinner. A zip line, rock wall, bungee jump and many bounce houses are added features to this summer’s market that can be enjoyed for a minimal fee. The evening includes entertainment by local favorite, Jeff Taylor from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Alan Palchak, Hilton Head's DJ of the Year, from 6:30 until the fireworks being around 9 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the fireworks! There be a fireworks display at HarbourFest at Shelter Cove Harbour. The typical Tuesday event will be held Monday, July 4 to celebrate our nation. The event features special patriotic music from local performer and kids’ favorite, Shannon Tanner at 6 p.m. The fireworks display will begin at 9:30 p.m. Call (843)785-1106 for details.
If you live or are visiting the south end of Hilton Head Island, Harbour Town will also host special Fourth of July festivities and fireworks. There will be children’s activities, live music and food and beverage available for purchase. The fireworks display will begin around 9:15 p.m. (dusk) from a barge on the Calibogue Sound. On the north end of Hilton Head Island, you can catch a fireworks display that will be launched from a barge in the Intracoastal Waterway near Skull Creek Marina. Get a front-row seat for the fireworks show, which starts at 9:30 p.m., at Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, Chart House or Skull Creek Boathouse. If you can’t find parking, there will be free parking and shuttle service from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island on Gum Tree Road to the parking lot of Chart House and back. Unfortunately there are no public fireworks displays in the Town of Bluffton, but that doesn’t stop residents and visitors from celebrating the U.S. of A! Dust off all your red, white and blue decorations such as streamers, garland and balloons and decorate your kids’ bikes, strollers and scooters for the Bluffton Children’s Fourth of July Parade. Children, families and friendly dogs are asked to line up at 10 a.m. at The Church of the Cross on Calhoun Street in Old Town Bluffton. The parade will end on Lawton Street around 11 a.m.
From certain areas around Bluffton, you can be lucky enough to catch the fireworks displays from Hilton Head Island and downtown Savannah. Find a friend with a dock on the May River and you'll have a front row seat to no less than 5 shows!
Beaufort and Beyond
In the Beaufort area, join in the festivities during the 4th of July Celebration & Fireworks at the Sands of Port Royal. Hosted by the Town of Port Royal and Historic Port Royal Foundation, the event begins at 5 p.m. and runs until after the fireworks display at dusk. Fun for the entire family, enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, face painting, jump castles and much more – including the U.S. Marine Corps Band! portroyal.org.
Not to forget our neighbors just to the south, Savannah hosts the River Street Fourth of July Celebration from 4 to 10 p.m. Enjoy live entertainment on the Rousakis Plaza Arbor Stage or bring the family and hang out in the kids’ zone. Bring chairs and blankets and get there early to grab your spot along the riverfront. The fireworks display is slated for 9:30 p.m.
