DATAW ISLAND GARDEN CLUB GAINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR BUTTERFLY GARDEN

National Garden Clubs, Inc. Recognizes Lowcountry Community’s Environmental Conservation Efforts

St. Helena Island, S.C. – Representatives from Dataw Island today announced they have received a national certificate of merit in honor of Deen Day Sanders and a $500 donation by Barbara S. Baker from the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC). This recognition came in the category of conservation for conducting the most comprehensive and effective project on butterflies through habitat and migratory routes protection, public education and the establishment of a butterfly garden at Dataw Island.

Pat de Satnick, president of the Dataw Garden Club and co-chair of the Butterfly Garden Committee, along with Nan Foley accepted the award on July 14 at the annual president’s meeting for the Garden Club of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.

Since its inception in 2000, the butterfly garden at Dataw Island has evolved from an empty lot into a 6,000-square-foot garden area with a focus on attracting butterflies by providing plants that aid in the feeding, sheltering and breeding of local species. The garden is maintained by the members of the Dataw Garden Club and is regularly visited by island residents, as well as groups from the community that are invited to learn about butterflies and their natural habitat.

In order to receive the NGC award, the Butterfly Garden Committee had to provide a book of evidence that consisted of a compilation of facts and information relating to Dataw’s butterfly garden that was judged on the state level before being sent to NGC to be judged against other books of evidence submitted from across the United States. The Dataw Garden Club was honored in the large club category for creating the butterfly garden to protect the local butterflies’ habitat and migratory routes, as well educating the public about the indigenous butterflies.

“We are honored to receive such a prestigious national award for our butterfly garden,” said Kevin Rhatigan, general manager and chief operating officer of Dataw Island. “Caring for our natural surroundings is a high priority for the staff and residents of Dataw Island and our butterfly garden is just one of the many examples of ways we at Dataw strive to preserve our environment and educate younger generations to protect and enjoy the world around them.”
